My most recent confession is this.
About one minute before Ranger has his blinding glimpses of intellect, I start despairing that he will ever learn The Thing.
We got Ranger this awesome little treat ball:
Here’s the link if you want to buy it for your dog (yes it’s an affiliate link, I have my paws crossed this will work someday): Omega Paw Tricky Treat Ball
After I showed Ranger exactly how it works, with the treats falling out of the little hole, he sniffed it and then poked it and another treat fell out and he ate it and then he ran around and barked at me.
So I put it on the floor and moved it with my foot and he ignored it completely and stared at me and ran to his bed.
Okay, great, Ranger. We have been working on that. I don’t want you to do that. LOOK AT THE THING.
So I made it spill some treats out and he ate them and then stared at me and ran around and barked some more.
I kept it up and he kept ignoring it or running around in circles barking.
The one minute before I was in Full Despair Mode. The one minute before I reached abject panic regarding how to explain to Ranger’s fans that he couldn’t figure out that TREATS FALL OUT OF THE TREAT BALL, YOU GOOBERY DOG.
He got it.
Now, of course, he keeps getting it stuck and then staring at me and running around in circles barking. But it’s ok. This time, I promise myself, I won’t give up on him that one minute too soon. And you shouldn’t either.
Patience, patience, patience. That is ever our dogs’ gift to us.
